Chojun Miyagi Sensei 1888 - 1953

“Do not strike others and do not allow others to strike you.

The goal is peace without incident.”88 -

Our next event will feature Kuramoto Sensei from the Higaonna Dojo in Naha, Okinawa, who will be returning to the Traditional Okinawan Martial Arts Center for the resumption of our seminar program in May 2022. He made a powerful impression on our members during his last visit and is coming back by popular request.

Kuramoto Sensei has assisted Higaonna Sensei for many years and is noted for his technique and strength. He is a dedicated and knowledgeable teacher who has studied Goju Ryu Karate for more than forty years. There is an application form here or call 818 889 3856.

As previous attendees will already know, our events are special in many ways. Firstly, we make no distinction between rank, style, experience, or affiliation. Our purpose is to expose our members to the very best karate regardless of style. This is because  because fundamental karate ability is just that, ability from correct training.

Secondly, we work hard to foster an atmosphere of friendship, cooperation, and kinship and camaraderie. We don’t care what association you come from, what dojo you belong to, or who your teacher is. We are responsible for providing the very best teachers and creating an atmosphere where we can best enjoy the training.

This is why we practice together and  eat together. This includes our instructors so that members are free to ask questions and receive clear, precise answers. We are in the dojo to learn authentic karate, improve ourselves, and not simply show off our skills to others.

Humility is essential in human life, not simply talking about it but adhering to this simple principle. Therefore, when the restaurant did not have enough staff to service our private dining room at the last seminar banquet, there was a simple solution. The organizers and the instructors became waiters and distributed food and drinks to our members quite expertly. This is the karate spirit; you adjust to the circumstances in order to prevail!

If you attend our next event, you will see many of the same faces and probably already know their names. Our members bond and, they become one family, even if only for a short time.

For example, the group that trained with us in 2011, a few days after the Touhoku earthquake and tsunami, are still in regular contact via Facebook. They have become, as William Shakespeare put it, “A band of brothers.”

I can say with confidence and that you will not regret joining us at our next event. As the Okinawan karate people say: “Ichariba Chode – If we meet but once, even by chance, we become brothers and sisters!”

If you are already experienced, our instructors will take you to a higher level; if you are a beginner, you can learn from experts and thus avoid picking up bad habits from lower grade instructors. Our events are successful because we have a unity of purpose; to improve our ability, learn more about karate and enjoy ourselves while we make new dojo kyodai (karate brothers and sister).

When we organize an event, we try to think of the critical issues important to the Founder of the style being taught. How would we determine this, you might ask! In the case of Chojun Miyagi Sensei (left), I was fortunate enough to know several of his most prominent students personally and interview them formally. The last of these, Shuichi Arakaki Sensei, left us just a short time ago in 2021 at the age of ninety-three.
I learned that Chojun Sensei’s driving force was the quest for perfection. His students had to train every day, be punctual, and be willing to work hard. Cleanliness and order were essential to Miyagi Sensei also, and so were courtesy and correct manners.
Therefore, we invite only the best instructors from Japan to teach at our events. We plan everything from travel to hotels to lessons with military precision. The dojo, changing rooms, and other common areas of the Tenchi Dojo are maintained in spotless condition at all times. Information is updated regularly via the Internet, and our telephone hotline, 818 889 3856, is open Mon.-Sat. 8:00 am – 8:00 pm.
We take our obligation to create the best environment for learning while ensuring that our members truly enjoy themselves. We are here to serve you and take pleasure in doing so!
