Iaido developed during the Edo period to replace the more combat effective “Batto-jusu” which was a fierce art concerned only with drawing of one’s sword and in the same movement, cutting down the enemy. Iaido practitioners feel that their art is just as much concerned with the improvement of the character of the practitioner as his ability as an effective warrior.
