Originally written with the characters (      ) until 1936 when a group of senior karate exponents in Okinawa decided to change to the character for “empty” 空 (same pronunciation) and China hand became “empty hand,” Karate. Undoubtedly as Japan had invaded Manchuria on 18 September 1931 this was likely a response to political correctness.
