In 1936, senior Okinawan karate masters decided to rename Karate (China Hand)  Karate (Empty Hand) 空手. The decision was made at a meeting organized by the Ryukyu Shinpo newspaper in the Showa Kaikan, Naha, Okinawa.

Description

Present at the meeting were karate legends; Chomo Hanashiro, Chotoku Kyan, Choki Motobu, Choshin Chibana, Juhatsu Kiyoda and Chojun Miyagi. Both characters are pronounced “kara” so this decision have have been a politically correct of dealing with the fact that Japan was now at war with Manchuria (China) following the Mukden Incident of 1931
